About Dual World Theory
This site documents Dual World Theory: an evolving attempt to understand how complex systems persist while continuously absorbing change.
In this theory, a system is any bounded entity that must persist through time while continuously exchanging change with the external world. A living organism, an organization, a game server, a database, even a civilization can all be understood as systems in this sense.
A world is the total field of change that a system must face.
A system is the interpreter of the world; the world is what it must interpret.
Dual World exists only from the standpoint of a concrete system. Change the boundary, the scale, or the system's interpretive capacity, and the line between outside and inside shifts with it. What remains external noise for one system may already be internal order for another.

A system that must persist in time must simultaneously face two worlds.
The external world is, relative to a given system, the field of change that has not yet been organized. It appears entropic, chaotic, and parallel. It contains infinite possibilities, yet there is no necessity, only contingency.
The internal world is the order that the system extracts from this chaos: a low-entropy causal history that the system can explain and sustain.
The more "advanced" a system is, the more it can explain a rich perceptual world with a minimal causal structure.
External World
The external world is governed by the second law of thermodynamics: entropy continuously increases and disorder continuously spreads.
Its causal structure is not directly available to the system, so it shows up instead as a mix of correlation and contingency, with overlapping changes and no clear boundaries.
The external world does not explain itself. It does not tell the system which changes matter, which are invalid, or which happened first. It only throws noise at the system.
And yet it is also the source of everything. Energy, input, opportunity, and threat all come from there. Infinite possibility lies hidden within chaos.
Internal World
The internal world is the order a system extracts by reducing entropy from external noise.
Through interpretation, adjudication, and propagation, the system turns disordered change into a traceable history of facts. Only in that way can it:
- Form a continuous identity
- Share a stable reality with other systems
- Temporarily preserve structure inside an entropic universe
Causal Layer and Perceptual Layer
The Causal Layer is this process of entropy reduction itself: it turns unordered changes into stable causality through adjudication and serialization.
The Perceptual Layer is the system's contact surface with the external world and the source of high entropy. It continuously draws external chaos into the system, allowing the Causal Layer to reduce its entropy; at the same time, it unfolds the already confirmed factual history into rich continuous experience.
There is therefore no true parallelism in the macro world. What we call parallelism is only the projection of a serial causal history into space. This is not because we have chosen serialization, but because understanding itself requires serialization. Serialization is entropy reduction; it is the establishment of a narratable causal history. The Causal Layer is therefore not an engineering choice, but the logical precondition of any act of understanding.
For a software system that keeps evolving, a living organism, a nation, or even a civilization, the direction of time is the direction of continuous entropy reduction.
This is the core claim of Dual-World Theory.
